La Rabida Children's Hospital
Charles Horn III
The Charles Horn III Sickle Cell Program helps to underwrite a battery of tests known as Neurocognitive Screening for patients suffering from sickle cell anemia. These tests are extremely effective at predicting and identifying neurological deficiencies or damage in sickle cell patients. Furthermore, the program provides funding to support the clinicians that serve as advocates for sickle cell patients.  Due to amount of time that a patient may be spend away from school recouping from a sickle cell crisis, advocates are critical.  Through their efforts, a greater awareness about the disease and its impact to patients is realized.  As a result, schools are able to enhance scholastic services and assist in the development of individualized educational plans (IEP’s).
